The night before the 152nd birthday of diesel guru Rudolf Diesels 152nd birthday, Alfa Romeo has announced a new diesel engine for its MiTo compact hatchback line. Developed by Fiat, Alfa Romeos parent company, the new 1.3-liter JTDM II turbodiesel gulps down fuel at a rate of just 55 mpg in the U.S. combined cycle.
The four-cylinder churns out just 95 horsepower, although its 148 lb-ft. of torque at a low 1,500 rpm helps it hit 62 mph in a 11.6 seconds. Emissions are decreased to just 112 g/km of CO2 thanks to its second-generation turbocharger, an advanced diesel particulate filter and start-stop technology. These advances help it meet stern Euro 5 emissions standards.
The 1.3-liter MiTo diesel will be available in three trim levels in most European markets: Turismo, Lusso and Veloce.
