Craigslist Overpayment Scam -- My Fake Check!

To my surprise, today I received a UPS letter envelope containing a check for $2,450. From the ATP Oil & Gas Co. in Texas. Which I have never done business with. The return address on the UPS envelope was from a different location, in Minnesota, also a place I had never done business with.

Then I remembered--some guy had emailed me about a camera lens I was trying to sell on eBay, and offered to send me a check for it if I would ship it to him. I said "ok" in case he was legit, but I suspected he wasn't.

So here it is, my trophy. A ridiculously bad fake check. Note the strange mix of fongs -- Arial, Times, and Comic Sans. The smudge from my wetted finger.

Notice the signature. Look familiar? It's George W. Bush!

Bottom line, don't ever accept overpayment for a Craiglist item from a stranger, who wants you to return the overpayment via Western Union. It is 100% scam.

Bob King's Posturing

The UAW's president, aptly named Bob King, is out in the press landing punches before the first bell.

"I like Alan Mulally. But I just think it's morally wrong," said King, who assumed the leadership of the union last year. "It creates problems for Ford in both the salaried work force and the hourly work force. It seems like one individual is getting all of the gain."

This is typical left wing progressive posturing, setting up class envy as a wedge between the UAW's hourly workers and the managers of the auto companies.

"It seems like one individual is getting all of the gain". What?!? What about the shareholders? From a low of around $1.60, Ford's stock price has recovered to near $15. That is billions of dollars of value returned to stockholders, many of whom happen to be in the UAW. Not to mention jobs saved, direct and indirect. Ford dealer's didn't get crushed the way GM and Chrysler dealers did.

Alan Mullaly, though not single handedly, was a key player in keeping Ford from going bankrupt along with GM and Chrysler. As such, he is very valuable--CEOs who can save companies and preserve billions of dollars of shareholder value are not exactly hiding under every rock. Successful CEOs, like sports stars, have a market value. If Ford didn't offer Mullaly a generous performance based pay package, maybe he wouldn't have come from Boeing to save Ford. Maybe he would have been snapped up by some other company in need of a turn-around.

Maybe Ford would have gone under.

By the way, when was the last time you heard Bob King railing against the excessive pay of his unionized brethren, the professional football players of the NFL?

The PS Fluid Flush Scam, AGAIN

I got my oil changed the other day. I do it at my dealership because they give me points I can use to get free service, so it works out to be a reasonable deal. This time, they did the "we recommend you flush your power steering fluid' pitch on me, going so far as offering to show me that it was "dirty". Upon inspection my fluid (which is about 50,000mi old) was a medium cherry color, like cherry coke. Not very dirty.

Here's the truth. Power steering fluid is good for well over 100,000 miles in normal usage. It changes color because it leaches carbon black and other chemicals from the rubber power steering hoses and fittings. Just because it is dark does not mean it is damaged.

When should you flush your power steering fluid? If it gets overheated (not sure how, perhaps failing pump?), or contaminated. And you don't need to power flush it, you can simply suck it out with a turkey baster and refill the reservoir. According to an expert on this subject, who I happen to know, there has been no proven benefit from power steering pressure flushing.

When the dealer pushes you to change your power steering fluid, he is really just trying to improve his profit margin on your sale.

SPD WTF

This morning, I was driving in to work and noticed the local "Irish" bar had people huddled in the doorway, waiting for the place to open for service.

It was 8:30 am.

If I was Irish I think I would be annoyed that my cultural heritage was being used an excuse to drink all day.

2011 Hamann Hawk

2011 Hamann Hawk in light pink colour

Hamann Motorsport has prepared its own version of the gull-winged supercar called the Hawk. Its for marking debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. An engine bursting with power wrapped into an exciting car body design coloured in Everose Gold.

Exterior, the Everose Gold painted Hawk sports a heavily modified bodywork including a new front bumper and a carbon fiber hood. The profile is dominated by the black 21-inch rims and the side skirts. At the back, theres a large wing made from carbon fiber, while the same lightweight material has been used on the new boot. The restyled rear bumper that incorporates a diffuser and houses the quad tail pipes, completes the look.

While in interior, Hamann has dressed the SLS AMG in a combination of suede and leather, and also added carbon fiber trim on the steering wheel, center console and door sills.

Under bonnet, the SLS AMGs 6.2-liter V8 engine receives an additional 65 horsepower, for a total of 636HP and a maximum torque of 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) at 4,850 rpm. The extra power comes from a high-performance titanium exhaust system, new manifolds, sports catalysts and a sports air filter. As a result, top speed is increased by 3 km/h higher to 320 km/h (199 mph), while the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes only 3.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the standard production car.

2011 Hamann Hawk comes with four height-adjustable dampers and four progressively wound springs, which lower the car by up to 30 mm.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Brabus 800 Widestar

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Brabus 800 Widestar beautiful picture

Following in the footsteps of the 700HP Brabus G V12 S, Mercedes-Benz tuning specialist Brabus has unleashed the 800 Widestar, an extreme version of the G-Class off-roader.

The 800 Widestar is equipped with an V12 engine sourced from the Mercedes-Benz S600, but with extensive upgrades such as the increase in displacement from 5.4 to 6.3-liters, the addition of a new intake system, new engine mapping and the complex Brabus bi-turbo system featuring four water-to-air intercoolers. Additionally, the V12 is fitted with a custom stainless-steel exhaust-system.

All these put together lead to a maximum output of 800 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and a truck-like torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft), available from 2,100 rpm. However, peak torque is electronically limited to 1,100 Nm, in order to protect the transmission.

The reinforced five-speed automatic gearbox sends the enormous torque to all four wheels via a permanent 4WD system, with the results being mind-blowing for an off-roader. 0 to 100 km/h takes just a mere 4 seconds, while top speed is limited to 240 km/h (149 mph). Without the limiter, Brabus reckons the 800 Widestar could reach 270 km/h (168 mph).

As the name suggests, the car has received a wide-body treatment, with the fender flares adding 12 cm (4.7 in) to the body width leaving enough space for wheels sized between 20 and 23 inches. Overall, the car looks quite aggressive and intimidating.

It also features Brabus' Ride Control suspension with automatic damper adjustment. Inside, the 800 Widestar gets an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel, a speedometer with 280 km/h (182 mph) dial and stainless-steel scuff plates with illuminated BRABUS logo.

2012 Ford Territory

2012 Ford Territory front side

Following an extensive development programme the covers have finally come off the highly anticipated new-model Ford Territory. The Australian-designed-and-developed SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) has undergone an extensive visual update inside and out. The new Territory wears a stylish suit cut from Ford's kinetic design language and its bold new look makes it instantly recognisable as a member of Ford's comprehensive model family.

Redesigning the multi-award-winning Ford Territory meant building on its already clean and attractive looks, the result of the first-generation Territory's original design goal: to create a vehicle that embodied the strength and power of a traditional SUV while having the prestige, agility and nimbleness of a sporting sedan. The new Ford Territory has taken this to another level.

Underpinning new Ford Territory's design was its dual personality: a sophisticated and sporty urban wagon for weekdays and a family getaway vehicle on weekends. Successfully presenting these two functional roles in an exciting visual form was the responsibility of the Ford Australia design team, headed by Chris Svensson, Design Director for Ford Asia Pacific and Africa.

"We worked hard to ensure the new Territory was an evolution of the original model and, through the use of Ford's distinct design DNA, also gave a hint of the future," Svensson said. "To achieve this we applied Ford's unique style philosophy: kinetic design. Kinetic design comprises several specific elements, all of which are present in the new Ford Territory. They are confident stance, dynamic lines, expressive form language, taut surfacing, bold graphics and great detailing. When you combine them they convey movement and athleticism. In other words, the vehicle looks like it is moving when standing still. The overall visual effect of kinetic design is simple: in the case of the new Ford Territory it communicates its dynamic capabilities and fun-to-drive spirit."Externally, significant changes to Territory's styling have resulted in a stunning new look. At the front, the vehicle uses an all-new tri-plane front-end architecture. The new trapezoid-shaped main grille is one of the new Ford Territory's most noticeable updates. This larger, lower grille in a unique three-bar design connects with the slim-line treatment given to the upper grille opening, a feature which sees the famous Ford roundel now surrounded by its own elegant winged structure.

New slim-line headlights with projector beam technology are another stand-out feature of the new Ford Territory's frontal styling. The high-series Titanium variant takes this a step further with the introduction of LED (Light-Emitting Diode) position lamps integrated into its redesigned front bumper. At the bottom of Territory's new face is a U-formed lower chin skid plate.

Combining these stunning elements has produced an impressive new look.

"New Ford Territory's unique frontal design was recognised by Ford's Global Design Management as a key feature that not only identified Territory as a distinctly Australian product, but also embodies cues that are core to the Ford design DNA," Chris Svensson said. "That's the strength of our global One Ford philosophy. The design of Ford Territory was developed as part of our global philosophy but specifically crafted to appeal to the Australian consumer."

Moving rearwards, the new Territory sports a sculpted new bonnet and subtle flutes for the front guards. Bold wheel lips emphasise its athletic stance.

A new C-pillar design smooths the transition from front to rear. Resurfaced door cladding and a lower rocker moulding combine to give Ford Territory a lower, athletic stance.

At the rear, Svensson's highly skilled team has made a number of enhancements. New Territory sports sleek horizontal tail lights that wrap around the rear of the vehicle that create a seamless visual link to the rear of the vehicle. Connecting them is a new rear lift-gate appliqu. Finishing the new rear styling is a redesigned bumper and new lower-level valence panel.

Rounding out new Ford Territory's exterior is a new catalogue of locally designed wheels, which will be available in diameters of 17 and 18 inches in model-specific designs.

On the inside, the popular SUV maintains its famed ability for almost endless adaptation to Australian lifestyles. Its car-like cabin is sporty and sophisticated and continues its "dual personality" theme by delivering stunning form and excellent function.

The new Territory is fitted with an all-new Instrument Panel (IP) featuring - for the first time - an eight-inch touch screen and new functional storage solutions. Ford Territory drivers will find the technologically advanced touch screen both easy to reach and use and its central location makes it simple for both front occupants to operate.

A new four-spoke steering wheel puts drivers in control of the new Territory's impressive handling capabilities and gives finger-tip control to audio and cruise control functions.

Ford Territory's new Interior Command Centre (ICC) provides front-seat occupants with familiar and simple-to-use controls for functions such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning. At the bottom of this new ICC is an all-new storage area. This stylish and functional feature uses a smooth-action tambour door which adds to the interior's equally smooth style. It is here the new IP connects with Territory's stylish and functional centre console. Versatile cup holders, deep console bin storage and USB / iPod connectivity exemplify Ford Territory's famed user-friendliness.

Carefully selected materials and colours bring the new Territory's exterior design inside. For example, high-gloss spears adorn the centre console in the Territory Titanium and connect the front of the interior with the middle seat row. Spears of a similar design feature on the new IP.

Chris Svensson: "The contemporary design of the new Ford Territory combines stylish surfacing, exact proportions and high-quality finishes with advanced engineering and delivers a vehicle that is even further refined and composed on the road."

EXTERIOR DESIGN

For some, designing a vehicle with two personalities would be considered a tough challenge. Not for Todd Willing, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa's Melbourne-based chief designer responsible for the new Territory's stunning look.

"Ford Territory's credentials as the weekday family car ideal for weekend getaways are well established and it is this dual personality - one of Territory's many attractive features - that is emphasised in its new exterior design," Willing said. "The new Territory exhibits a rugged outdoors-oriented look but its contemporary design is just as at home in the city. Keeping that connection was important, as was showcasing Ford's distinct design DNA - especially the styling hallmarks from the company's passenger car family."

Front

The front end of the new Ford Territory uses a modern tri-plane design. This kinetic facial layout achieves its dynamic look by combining several important elements.

Precision-design projector headlights give the new Territory an immediate attitude that is modern and polished. These are connected visually by a slim-line upper air intake grille that wears a unique wing-formed shape formed from a single bar. This sharp design element surrounds the centrally mounted Blue Oval badge. It is an entirely new design feature from the Ford Australia design team.

"By adding some definition around the Ford badge we have made it more three-dimensional and prominent without changing its size," Willing said. "It is an important feature fitted to the new Ford Territory's frontal design and one which has the potential to be adopted elsewhere."

One of new Territory's most dominating frontal features is its new centrally located main grille opening. This clipped trapezoidal air intake is an important part of Territory's kinetic styling and features an eye-catching triple open-bar design. These bars are given additional attention on the range-leading Titanium version by wearing a chrome finish for a high-jewel effect.

"Dominating the front-end design of the new Ford Territory is its striking trapezoid main grille, a design feature our global design colleagues have recognised as highly creative in forging Territory as a uniquely Australian design," Willing said.

The clipped trapezoid-shaped air intake is more than just a showpiece; its eye-catching shape is also the result of the Ford Territory's cooling needs.

Todd Willing: "The overall main grille design is tied into Territory's engine cooling airflow requirements so getting the final shape absolutely correct had as much to do with engineering as it did aesthetics."

Moving downwards, new Ford Territory's face is completed by an integrated U-form lower chin skid plate. This subtle design feature emphasises Territory's versatility as an outdoor-lifestyle vehicle. It is also a strong yet smooth design element that finishes the vehicle's new frontal style.

Another first for new Ford Territory is the fitment of high-tech LED (Light-Emitting Diode) position lamps. These are fitted to the range-leading Territory Titanium and are usually found on more expensive European SUVs. They are located at the outer edges of the lower trapezoid grille and they operate as position lamps. They also constitute a signature design feature for Ford Territory Titanium. Round fog lights are fitted to the mid-range TS model.

Bonnet

Moving up to the bonnet, Willing and his team have added more surface sculpting.

"We wanted to add more muscularity to the bonnet design with a modest bulge that hints at the available power underneath," Willing said. "These details refer to the arrival of the new TDCi V6 engine and the finer sculpture treatments across both the bonnet and front of the car add to the message of a more dynamic design."

Side profile

The new Territory wears fender features, also known as guard flutes, that add to its sense of strength. This design detail also helps differentiate between each of the models in the series: TX, TS and Titanium. The chrome finish fitted to the Titanium hints at its premium status.

Willing: "The Ford Territory's doors now wear a more integrated design and we have surfaced the door cladding and lower door moulding to make it flusher. The body is given a lower look overall which is a more dynamic appearance."

The SUV's integrated roof rails carry over from the outgoing model Territory and make cross-bar mounting easy to enhance the vehicle's versatility.

Rear

To unite the new Territory's front and rear designs Willing's team has made the C-pillar sit flush with the body and there is a subtle kink to the top edge of the C-pillar side window to give a more three-dimensional look.

"The new Ford Territory's rear-three-quarter sheet metal is all new and this gave us the freedom to give it a sleek and modern finish," Willing said. "The rear side glass is also clipped to sharpen the new Territory's overall profile."

Immediately apparent at the rear of the new Territory is the new design of its tail lights. These shoulder-set lights wrap around into Ford Territory's rear three-quarter panels and connect the side- and rear-end treatments. Their design is more car-like and their jewel-like effect transforms the look of the new Territory at the rear, especially at a three-quarter angle.

A number of subtle yet highly effective enhancements underpin the new Territory's overall modern rear styling.

"We have been able to connect the tail-light treatment with a new rear lift-gate appliqu across the back of the car," Todd Willing said. "This not only looks more contemporary but helps visually widen the rear of the car. The rear bumper has been restyled along with the rear lower protective skid plate - a feature which matches that used on the front of the car as well as the hexagonal design used in Ford Territory's door kick plates."

The range-leading Titanium model features twin chrome C-shaped accents embedded into the lower valence panel. This subtle graphic touch again differentiates the range-leading version and helps emphasise new Territory's tapered rear design.

The new Territory retains the clever multi-piece tailgate with integrated release handle and easy-access flip-glass.

INTERIOR DESIGN

The Ford Australia design team responsible for the new Territory's interior has worked to build on the model's famed functionality and attractive cabin. New Ford Territory's five- or seven-seat flexibility, user-friendly technology and driver-oriented cockpit provide the ideal environment for today's modern family.

Melbourne-based Scott Ferrier, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa's Design Manager for passenger car interiors, said it was vital to maintain familiarity when developing new Territory's interior.

"When we first designed the Territory our customers hailed the vehicle's functionality, spaciousness, and design," he said. "Territory is a very successful model for Ford. We had to enhance it with respect to its many existing owners, all of whom are essential to the model's continued success. Hence, there are several aspects to the new Territory's interior that identify with the original model. Drivers will find the positioning of the new Territory's controls both familiar and easy to use. The layout of the panel's instrument cluster and central LED screen, the centre console, button controls and steering column-mounted stalk controls are stylish and logical."

Instrument Panel (IP), Steering Wheel and All-new 8-inch Touch Screen

The new Ford Territory's fundamental interior architecture remains unchanged and starts with its seven-seat "theatre-style" seating layout (standard fitment on Titanium and TS, optional at extra cost on TX).

Each of the three variants - TX, TS and Titanium - receives unique cabin treatments taken from new Territory's kinetic design DNA.

Customers will instantly feel at home with the clearly visible Ford design language obvious in the new Ford Territory's enhanced interior space.

Headlining the list of enhancements are the new instrument panel (IP), centre console, and four-spoke steering wheel, all of which share their design origins from the current-model FG Falcon sedan. The design of their push-button controls and elegant layout add to the interior's up-to-date feel.

Behind the new four-spoke steering wheel, the new instrument panel's easy-to-read gauge cluster with centrally mounted LED screen is elegant and effective. New, round air vents are located at each end of the new instrument panel. These not only enhance the look of the cabin but also provide efficient cooling and heating.

The new Territory's Interior Command Centre (ICC) - which is located at the centre of the instrument panel - is also familiar from the FG Falcon but it arrives in the new Ford Territory with a special addition. In an Australian Ford-first, the new Territory will be available with Ford's advanced eight-inch colour touch screen - a technology milestone for an Australian-built Ford vehicle. This stylish and simple-to-use feature will be fitted to the Territory TS and Titanium models as standard equipment. The Ford Territory TX will be fitted with a 5.8-inch monochromatic display screen.

This signature touch-screen feature is mounted at the top of the instrument panel's ICC and within easy view and reach for both the driver and front passenger. The sleek-looking unit controls functions such as Territory's audio system, telephone and climate controls.

Scott Ferrier: "The new colour touch screen is very easy to operate from both front seats and we worked hard to ensure it is suitably recessed to shield it from direct sunlight."

At the base of the ICC and located just ahead of the transmission gear shifter is another all-new feature. A stylish tambour door conceals a deeply recessed storage bin with ample room for mobile telephones, CDs, iPods or small cameras. It also offers dedicated storage for a tissue box and has an integrated pen holder and a 12-volt accessory outlet.

This storage unit is a clever addition to Territory's famed functionality and packaging. The roller-action tambour door has been carefully developed to provide a smooth and damped action reminiscent of those found in more expensive European cars. It has also been sculpted as part of the new Ford Territory's centre console, the comfortable design of which will also be familiar to Ford drivers.

The centre console now comes with recessed cup holders for better stowage and their rubber surrounds offer increased support. They are also located well clear of the handbrake and transmission shifter.

Another key aspect of the new Territory's interior design is the structural wrap-around for the centre console and the satin spears. These emphasise strength and are one of the many kinetic design touches that match Territory's interior with its exterior.

COLOUR AND MATERIALS DESIGN

An essential element of new Ford Territory's interior design brief was the use of more luxurious fabrics on all model variants, giving the occupant space a high level of quality, sophistication and comfort.

Emily Lai, Ford Australia's Design Manager for Colours and Materials, said the new Territory's architectural-type interior finishes of satin and bright chrome were the result of customer feedback.

"Our customers made it clear they wanted to feel like they were in a car, not a truck," she said. "The new Ford Territory's cabin environment is both sporty and sophisticated and its high chrome and satin highlights are modelled on the architectural finishes found in many modern homes and businesses. Both satin and gloss finishes not only provide a high level of sophisticated elegance but link the vehicle's exterior styling with the interior."

The stylish cabin design carries from the front-seat area to the middle- and third-row passengers, areas often overlooked by designers. There is no compromise with the look and feel of the materials from the front of the cabin to the rear.

The new Territory will be available in a variety of upholstery colours and finishes. For example, the no-cost optional light-coloured leather seats in the new range-leading Titanium model, Cashmere, provides a tonal environment that reflects light with the use of high-gloss and satin-metallic finishes. It adds a feeling of heightened visual comfort traditionally found in luxury cars and SUVs. The interior of the Titanium model is partly upholstered in high-grade leather and will also be available in a Shadow (black) environment. The mid-level TS model also wears a Shadow environment and will feature a colour keyed cloth-suede combination seat trim and satin-metallic finishes. The TX will be available in a Shadow environment offering a colour-harmonised cloth seat trim and technical satin finish accents.

The new Territory's instrument panel wears the same high-quality grain finish that was developed specifically for the current-model FG Falcon. Called "Natural", it is designed to vary subtly in size, scale and depth throughout the IP. Natural gives a softer, more leather-like appearance.

Storage: Clever and Practical Packaging

New Ford Territory builds on its famed interior functionality. Customers will enjoy the clever lockable drawer located under the driver's seat and the handbag / umbrella recesses next to both the driver and front passenger seats. In addition to the revised centre console-mounted cup holders there are adjustable door-mounted versions for cups and bottles of varying size. Each rear door has an integrated stowage area as do the sides of the third-row passenger compartment, which are fitted with armrest bins and cup holders. The new Territory also comes fitted with map pockets and seat pockets along with a flat folding floor for the rear compartment.

2011 Brabus 700 Biturb twin-turbo engine with 700 hp

Brabus 700 Biturbo i powered by the new Brabus twin-turbo engine with 700 hp (690 bhp) / 514 kW and a peak torque of 850 Nm (626 lb-ft) and clad in the thrilling Widestar wide-body version the Mercedes SLS AMG from Brabus ascends to a new level in the league of super sports cars. The gullwing, further refined by an exclusive interior, reaches a top speed of 340 km/h (213 mph) and celebrates its world debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

A high-tech turbocharger system for the high-tech engine of the SLS: The Brabus engine engineers have designed a state-of-the-art twin turbo system for the fast-revving eight-cylinder four-valve engine of the SLS.

The high-performance exhaust manifolds are optimized for exhaust-gas flow and were custom-developed for this sports car. They drive the two turbochargers. The chargers themselves are another Brabus custom development. For faster response and better efficiency both chargers feature an air diverter valve.

V-engines are normally fitted with two right-turning chargers, which entails drawbacks for the response characteristics. To eliminate these drawbacks the Brabus engineers have developed the B63 bi-turbo system with a left-turning charger for the left side of the engine. That allows the turbine and its inlet to be designed for perfect gas flow and gas dynamics. The result is an outstanding engine with an exemplary power curve.

2012 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Series 51

2012 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Series 51 on speed

Series 51 represents Bentley design at its most vibrant. It allows customers of both Continental Flying Spur and Flying Spur Speed to order 'off the peg' from an innovative and exclusive range of recommended combinations created by Bentley's colour and trim designers at the company's headquarters in Crewe, England, as Dirk van Braeckel, Bentley's director of design comments:

"The Series 51 design concept is inspired by the spirit of the inaugural Bentley styling department in Crewe established by the gifted John Blatchley, who shaped the original and iconic 1950s Bentley Continentals. Today, it provides for a virtually bespoke ordering service due to the thousands of configurations available through Bentley's expansive colour and trim catalogue."

First offered on the Continental GT and GTC in 2009, Bentley's colour and trim team has now created no fewer than14 unique Series 51 designs for the Continental Flying Spur and Flying Spur Speed, enabling customers to tailor their cars to their individual tastes as Melinda June-Jenkins, manager of colour and trim, explains:"Each Series 51 Flying Spur is instantly recognisable - most notably in the cabin area - where the colour and trim team has created a wide selection of three-tone interiors demonstrating the full potential of the company's vast colour palette."

For Series 51 designs, the Bentley styling team operates on a 'rule of three' principle to create complex but harmonising colour schemes of depth and beauty, inspired by a customer's simple choice of three contrasting colours. With luxurious wood veneers and leather hides as the main canvas, the colour and trim specialists begin with a main interior colour (typically a darker shade) and then select a second insert colour to provide an eye-catching contrast. A critical skill is identifying the third 'accent' colour for the stitching and piping.

The selection of wood veneers or aluminium panels for the dashboard either complements the overall look or provides even greater contrast if the customer so desires.

Bentley has reserved the limited-edition Sapelli Pomelle veneer (which provides a rare, naturally occurring quilted effect in the wood) for the Series 51 Flying Spur and a range of further options, including Bentley's leather trimmed child seat and scatter cushions for the rear seats, may also be specified to further complement the exclusive design.

Whilst the 14 options for the Series 51 Flying Spur provide customers with the opportunity to select some of Bentley's most eye-catching design work, the colour and trim team is also more than happy to create even more bespoke designs, knowing they have only shown a fraction of the possibilities, as Melinda-June Jenkins explains:

"One of the most exciting aspects of the Series 51 designs is the feedback from Bentley customers and their desire to explore further what we can offer. Series 51 provides just a starting point and now we are creating designs which make an even stronger and more personal statement."

Striking range of Series 51 duo-tone paint options

The same imaginative use of colour is extended to the coachwork of all Series 51 Continental Flying Spurs. A range of striking John Blatchley-inspired duo-tone paint options, with one accent colour sweeping from the bonnet, over the roof and onto the bootlid, may be specified.

The paint range encompasses cool and crisp hues through to rich and fiery shades and everything in between with the Bentley colour and trim team recommending one of the three selected interior colours to complement and highlight the relationship between inside and out.

Bentley has also created a unique Series 51 graphite-finished nine-spoke, 19-inch sports alloy wheel, while twin Series 51 wing badges, positioned behind the front wheel arches, complete the bespoke look.

As a further sporting touch, all the latest Continental Flying Spurs, including Series 51 models, may now be specified with distinctive blue brake callipers and front wing vents styled by Bentley's head of exterior design, Raul Pires. These sleek vents, positioned to the rear of the front wheel arches, are set into a uniquely tooled wing panel and feature a black or chrome mesh finish.

Advanced and intuitive touchscreen infotainment technology

All 2012 model year Bentley Continental Flying Spur and Supersports coupe and convertible models are now equipped with a new, highly-advanced touchscreen infotainment system that provides rich map imagery and a 30GB on-board hard drive.

An 8-inch screen displays the car's audio system, telephone, ride and comfort settings as well as the very latest navigation system, which uses both an in-car hard-disc drive and a DVD player to access route data. It also utilises dynamic navigation to avoid heavy traffic spots, locates destinations using geo-tagged photos from an SD memory card and is Google Maps-compatible for most markets.

The infotainment system, with 7-digit postcode entry, combines touchscreen controls and classic Bentley knurled rotary switches to offer instant usability and crystal-clear feedback. The graphic interface of the screen was specified by Bentley's interior design team to ensure its visuals are wholly in keeping with the classic, handcrafted interior. The 'knurled' switches on the screen for example, are 'virtual' echoes of the knurled texture of the jewel-like rotary switches below.

The latest Continental Flying Spur and Supersports models also benefit from telephone and music player connectivity, digital television (where available) and DVD movie playback. Music can be played and controlled directly from an iPod as well as from a six-disc CD changer, SD card reader or directly from the car's hard-disc drive, which can store up to 15GB of music.

The new infotainment system is complemented by a new driver information panel (DIP) located in the main instrument cluster. The new wide-screen DIP employs TFT technology and enhanced graphics provide the driver with clear and easily accessible information about a wide range of car systems. These include the setting of head lamp 'coming home' controls, door locking and mirror functions while providing significantly improved control of such features as phone pairing and bluetooth media connectivity.

The new 2012 model year Continental Flying Spur, Flying Spur Speed and their Series 51 design options, together with the 2012 Supersports coupe and convertible models go on sale from March 2011.

2011 Singer 911

2011 Singer 911 front side

It is hard to believe, but the Porsche 911 exists despite Porsche's own attempts to eliminate and replace their beloved icon. This rear engine, 2+2 coupe has defied attempts (type 951 and 928) to terminate its allegedly dated concept only to be re-invented in superior form and bask in a renewed wave of enthusiasm.

The 911 brand is so compelling to consumers that even cars that are not 911's (Types 930, 964, 993, 996, 997) have been badged as such since 1990. Such is the influence of a model and a brand within Porsche that as the vehicle made vast technical leaps, even wholly re-invented it remains a 911. The original 911, with its air/oil cooled engine was built from 1964 to 1989. This model was succeeded by two much more evolved 911's that were still air/oil cooled; the type 964 and 993. The 964 and 993 are still lauded for their own technical brilliance, but the vehicles gained weight and complexity addressing safety, (airbags) emissions, and feature/ options concerns. One could argue that the last air/oil cooled 911's, though brilliant, paid a price for their sophistication.

However, 1998 brought the first 911 to rely on water cooling for the engine, and it introduced the first all-new and larger body shell to the model since 1964. In addition, it was the first 911 to feature an engine with four valves per cylinder which would help it meet power demands and emissions requirements. While the early 911's were beloved for their unique sound, a baritone growl that was a product of the engine noise itself which could easily escape through the thinner castings and cylinder walls (not surrounded by water) and projected by the fan atop the motor. In the interest of compliance, performance, and evolution both sound effects were eliminated. After surviving 35 years, this integral piece of the 911's character had been severed from the car's persona. The feel of hydraulic power assisted steering (equipped on 911 since the 964), the larger shell, the swollen wheelbase and dimensions, the raked windshield, the front end components shared with the more inexpensive Boxters were among a list of elements that conspired to make the 996, while certainly a BETTER car, a less beloved 911. The longing for a "true" 911 grew louder from 911 enthusiasts and owners lamenting the changes made to their favorite sportscar in the name of "progress."

Nevertheless, a rational person can admit that the advances made in vehicle design since 1963 have ushered in improved powertrain, unibody, and suspension technologies yielding a vehicle with greater overall capability. But have the evolved water-cooled 911's proven more enjoyable? Is the drive more fulfilling? What of the magic behind the wheel? It is this fulfillment that is at the core of the original driver-focused 911 concept, and wholly recaptured, yet vastly enhanced by the vision of Singer Vehicle Design.

The Singer 911 is no mere imitation, clone or retro-hot rod, but a re-interpretation and rebirth of the early performance-focused 911's. The new vehicle is the result of a fusion between the purity of the original 911 and modern materials, design, and updated technologies, and aftermarket experience into a unique sports car that recaptures the essence of the early 911's golden age. The Singer 911 capitalizes on the 40 years of solutions and enhancements that have resulted from the racing aftermarket's embracing the original 911. Borrowing the best elements from the air/oil cooled 911's long production span such as the "chic" of the long hood pre-'74 race specials, and the engineering durability of the later cars from the 80's and 90's, Singer Vehicle Design capitalizes on the vast know how and evolutionary advances the original 911 has enjoyed. The experience offered by the new Singer 911 is a passionate celebration of the history making, iconic 911, and creates an enhanced sportscar that honors the original 911's soul.

Unibody and Suspension

Beginning with any longer wheelbase 911 (1969 to 1989) donor car, the Singer 911 is stripped to its shell to begin reinvention. The reincarnation retains the original wheelbase, the A-pillar position, the roofline, suspension mounting and transaxle mounting points. Everything else is restored, reimagined and vastly improved for performance and expression.

To optimize suspension performance add rigidity to the unibody, the 911 donor car's structure has been thoroughly reinforced with a labor intensive stitch welding procedure and the addition of a lightweight integral backbone structure that helps further improve the chassis torsional rigidity. A developmental carbon-fiber second skin further aids this rigidity. The benefits of such measures to ride and handling given the improvements in unibody's resistance to twisting are vast, as the suspension is converted from torsion bars to the Macpherson strut and Carrera SC rear trailing arm with coilover set-up seen on vintage racing 911's. Moton dampers with remote oil reservoirs and Eibach springs are used at all four corners and offer multiple settings for ride and handling that the steel shell can now fully exploit. The Singer 911 will also benefit from extensive use of Smart Racing suspension products, such as multi-adjustable anti-roll bars, suspension bushing that help maintain correct geometry.

A Jerry Woods Enterprises electric/hydraulic power steering system is fitted to the Singer 911 that maintains the vital 911steering feel and feedback while helping quicken the steering reactions as compared to the original ZF rack and pinion.

The racing 911's were famous for their braking ability and making up distance on the competition in the corners. The Singer 911 is equipped with competition-proven Brembo calipers (4-pot) and rotors that are derived from the 917 and 930 models. The brakes will be peeking out from behind period-evoking Zuffenhaus, lightweight, five-spoke, three-piece forged aluminum wheels. The 17 x 9-inch front wheels are wrapped in sticky, modern Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires measuring 225/45/17 and the rear 17 x 11-inch wheel wears 275/40/17 rubber.

Drivetrain

The Singer 911 utilizes the most evolved air/oil cooled 911 engine from the 993. However, the goal with the stock 3.6-liter engine was to develop it into the most modern rendering of the air/ oil cooled engine concept. With the help of U.K.-based, Ninemeister, masterminded by engineer, Colin Belton, and constructed in San Francisco by famed engine builder Jerry Woods Enterprises, the stock 3.6-liter engine is rebuilt to displace 3.82 liters. The engine has been recreated with premium components successfully developed and proven through Ninemeister's racing exploits. The Singer 911's engine achieves its displacement with Ninemeister 103mm pistons and cylinders, the 76.4mm crankshaft of the 997 GT3, and the 132mm lightweight titanium connecting rods. The large bore, short stroke combination can spin to 8000 rpm, but offers a broad, flexible torque curve. The key to the power are the highly developed Ninemeister billet aluminum heads that allows this 12-valve engine to compete with the power of water-cooled 24-valve engines found in the latest version of the GT3. A completely re-engineered component the billet aluminum Ninemeister heads are stronger, more resistant to extreme heat, and feature the latest thinking in port design to vastly improve the breathing and output of these motors.

A Ninemeister valvetrain with valves, springs, and cam profiles have been designed to maximize the cylinder heads port flow capabilities and are a vital piece of the combination. Ninemeister's individual throttle body induction provides maximum tunable power to each cylinder with eye-popping throttle response, and most importantly perhaps, the sweetest 911 exhaust growl imaginable. More importantly, the engine will be managed by an advanced Motec M800 ECU that also adds launch control, traction control, data logging capability -- all electronic features never seen on the original 911's.

For customers, the engine will be available in two states of tune - luxury and touring. Singer will have a tune producing about 360hp with a broad torque curve. For higher performance, a more track focused state of tune offers 425 hp and 340 lbs. ft. of torque. A 997 GT3R oil pump moves oil through the Singer 911's high capacity dry sump system will be improved with an enhanced fan-assisted cooling system. Race-car spec stainless steel braided hose and fittings are used throughout the Singer 911. The bulletproof 3.82-liter engine combination is matched to a nearly indestructible six-speed G50 transaxle that has been revised with a close ratio cogs, and a limited slip differential. A twin plate carbon clutch capable of withstanding 700 lbs. ft. of torque and a lightweight flywheel help transmit engine power to the transmission. The Singer 911 expels engine fumes through lightweight stainless steel heat exchangers that flow to 100 cell catalytic converters, and a Singer Design stainless steel muffler that helps enhance the motor's sonorous tone.

The Singer's performance will be scintillating as the vehicle will get down to 2400 lbs. curb weight providing a nimble, connected and thoroughly fulfilling sportscar experience. With a power to weight ratio of 5.6 lbs per horsepower, the 425 hp Sports version explodes from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds, 0 to 100mph in 8.5 seconds, and exceeds a top speed of 170 mph.

Interior

As for the interior, the Singer 911 features an original 911-style instrument cluster with all-new gauges set in a revised dash panel. The Singer 911 interior is not carpeted in keeping with the traditional feel of the spartan race-focused 911's (R, ST, and RSR) but will be trimmed in supple dark racing green leather. Thin, lightweight but effective sound deadening measures controls interior noise while still maintaining the aural persona of the early 911's. A re-engineered vintage 911 Recaro seat uses structural carbon fiber in addition to offering fully electric operation and premium leather surface covering. Finally, no vintage, performance focused interior would be complete without a MOMO steering wheel and the Singer 911 features a new interpretation of the company's classic 'Monza' wheel.

Acknowledging the advances in conveniences missing in the original 911, modern amenities such as a lightweight electric air conditioning system, Garmin Navigation system, ipod interface and even Bluetooth connectivity are also available in the Singer 911. Care is taken to add these features while minimizing any weight penalty by utilizing a lightweight wiring harness for all accessories and engine management.

Exterior

Extensive use of composite materials (carbon fiber) for the entire vehicle exterior will leave the door panels as the only original sheetmetal on the Singer 911. The composite materials form an exterior for the Singer 911 that re-invents while emulating the early 911 RSR and ST's most prominent feature; the fender flares. These flares dictated the aggressive stance and sense of performance that these early cars conveyed even while standing still. Capitalizing on modern materials technology, the Singer 911 body makes extensive use of carbon fiber panels, and autoclave pre-preg Kevlar honeycomb in the creation of stunning, but very lightweight exterior pieces. The Singer 911 prototype is finished in vintage-appearing Singer Racing Orange. Other colors will be available to customers. In addition to the modern interpretation of the lightweight philosophy, the exterior will be updated with a uniquely designed HID headlamp arrangements that greatly improves exterior lighting.

The Singer 911's aerodynamic performance is improved with a front lip spoiler that reduces front end lift by 12 percent, and a speed sensitive rear spoiler that retracts back into the body (first seen on the 964).

The Feeling

Sure the Singer 911 looks like a vintage 911, and maintains some of the same character, but the connections its exterior evokes is unique. There are hints of 911R in the taillights and bumper design, as well as RSR in the bulbous flares, or even some 911ST in the profile, but there is no mistaking that upon closer inspection the Singer 911 is a very different interpretation of these vintage themes. Beneath that "long hood" emulating skin is the heart of the last air/oil cooled 911(type 993) and a host of the latest technology that places the Singer 911 in a place all its own. The car protects the romance of the original 911 concept but radically modernizes it into an ultimate 911 expression for the enthusiast who can never forget time spent behind the wheel of the car that started life as the 901 Concept. Forty-six years later, the Singer 911 prototype is the ultimate validation of the model that defined a brand, a segment, and became a cultural icon to generations.

GM Design of Holden Commodore Due in 2013

Good news for Commodore fans; General Motors design boss Ed Welburn was in Melbourne recently to sign off on the styling of the next Holden Commodore, due in Q3 2013. The as-of-yet-unrevealed VF Commodore will be an evolution of the current generation VE, sharing the same rear-wheel-drive platform and V6 engines. "It's the absolute right Commodore for that market, Mr. Welburn was quoted as saying, I feel very good about it.
Holden is said to be looking into lightening the VFs components to improve fuel economy with the new model, and is also putting a strong emphasis on improving drivetrain efficiency. Though Mr. Welburn refused to comment on whether the Commodore would come to the U.S. badged as a Chevy, he did say:
They are doing work for Holden and for other projects around the world. They are a very talented team very talented and I want to take full advantage of that. So, they are responsible for the look and feel of all Holden products, but they are doing work on Chevrolets, they have done some wonderful Buick work, and I could not be more proud of the work that they do.

Holden has substantial experience in vehicle design, and is currently working on one of three new Opels expected in 2013. Its still unknown which of the three which includes a four-seat convertible and an Opel Corsa-derived MPV Holden is working on.
Holdens managing director and chairman Mike Devereux hinted that the Commodore will continue to be rear-wheel-drive, unlike its main rival the Ford Falcon which is rumored to go front-wheel or all-wheel-drive for its next model cycle. Carscoop will remain abreast of this project and bring you all the details as they come in.
